I am frequently asked, “If humans are born to breathe correctly and effectively, why do so many of us become shallow breathers?” I can think of scores of reasons. But one blares alarmingly into my mind: Parents may be causing their babies to alter their natural inborn breathing ability without knowing it!
Shallow breathers will go through life with not only physical problems but emotional ones as well. Many physicians, psychotherapists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and other specialists are regularly publishing articles and books confirming the fact that how we breathe affects every aspect of our daily living.
Suddenly, I thought of what must be countless infants lying in their cribs struggling to breathe against confining waistbands. They have no choice but to resort to breathing into only the top portion of their lungs, which is “shallow breathing.” How alarming!
Watch a baby lying on its back with no restricting clothing. The stomach rises on inhalation and subsides on exhalation. This is how nature intends us to breathe deeply. Shallow breathers do the opposite: When they inhale, they pull in their stomachs, and they expand their stomachs on exhalation. Pulling in the stomach on inhalation causes the diaphragm muscle to push upward, fighting with the inflow of inhaled air. This minimizes air inflow, wastes energy, and creates tension.
More new baby clothes came along--size 6 months, then 9 months--and my daughter and I joyfully tried those beautiful little outfits on Nicholas. Suddenly, that nagging flash of concern resurfaced when I noticed that the pants he was wearing had a strong, resistant, half-inch-wide elastic waistband,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much too tight around the waist in proportion to the overall size of the rest of the garment. How ridiculous and horrifying! How can a baby breathe properly when he is so tightly bound across the middle of his torso--just at the place where the diaphragm muscle should ebb freely with each breath? His abdomen, which needs to be able to expand easily with each inhalation, is instead being challenged.

The diaphragm muscle is the sheet of muscle that separates your lung cavity from your abdominal cavity. You lower your diaphragm by expanding your stomach, which is your lower abdomen. Not so long ago, with much joy and pride, I joined the league of first-time grandmothers. I thoroughly enjoy seeing little Nicholas every week. Even changing his diapers has been fun for me. I asked my daughter to give me all of Nicholas’s pants with tight elastic waistbands. I bought some soft, narrow, elastic tape, got out my sewing machine, and replaced all those that were binding and too wide.
Breathing is our most important act, and we do it every moment of our lives. We breathe more than 20,000 times a day. If we can improve with each breath, think of the benefits we can accumulate. On the opposite end, consider how we shortchange ourselves by diminishing the benefit of each breath we take.

Most surfboards today come with the removable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as opposed to glassed-in, type of fin. Most brands do not have cross compatible boxes. Boxes are the devices that hold the fin on the surfboard. This makes it important to choose the system you want, as it affects all your fin choices for that surfboard in the future.
First, consider these fin characteristics:
Depth - The maximum height of a fin as measured from the bottom surface of the board. This shows how far the fin goes in the water. The hold of the surfboard increases with more depth but generally makes it harder to turn as well. 3-4 inch depth is standard on tri-fins and longboard single fins typically have a depth of nine inches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

There are many types of surfboard fin systems to choose from. Choosing the one that you want is an important part of choosing your surfboard. Fin characteristics as well as the brand of fin system are to be considered.
With so many choices of fins/companies available, you shouldn't have a problem finding something close to what you want. Study the different brands. They should have descriptions of the type of surf particular fins work best in. They usually have charts available for recommended weights of riders as well.
FCS - These fins are the most widely used surfboard fins in the world. The great things about FCS fins are the huge variety and the availability. You can almost always find a replacement at the nearest surf shop. Since FCS is the most common fin system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most surfboards come with that type of fin box. FCS makes a huge selection of fins. For fins with a softer edge try Pro-Tech. The are compatible with the FCS boxes. Installation is with a simple allen (hex) key.
Future - Probably the second most popular fin system in the US. They have some of the lightest fin boxes around, weighing in at about 26 grams/box. Armed with that knowledge, he marketed via the internet for those that recently lost their jobs, when they still had severance money and unemployment. This man was a successful peak performer. He took a personal problem, figured out what he needed and understood that there were thousands of people just like him. He could have chosen to stay stuck in the problem, but instead decided to be a peak performer and become a part of the solution.
When you think before you act, you respond. When you act with little or no forethought, you react. Peak performers respond. Poor performers react.
Here are the 5 ways peak performers view problems, and how they solve them practically with just a change in perception.
If you have weeds in your lawn and you want to remove them, do you spend your time treating the parts that you can see or deal with them at their roots? The former guarantees a return of the weeds. The latter eliminates the weeds going forward.
5. Problems are Challenges
Poor performers are constantly trying to remain the same. No wanting to invest the thought and energy to improve, they find themselves responding to problems the way they always have. They are quick to quip, “that’s just who I am”. They continue to respond in ways they may or may not properly reflect who they are or who they really want to be. However, they find comfort in the familiarity of the same old reaction time and time again.
1. Problems Reveal You
Peak performers never want to repeat problems. When they solve a problem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is solved completely once and for all. The way they do this is to consider the life lessons contained within the problem and its solution. They think about the circumstances that lead to this situation becoming a problem. They consider all contributing factors, the different angles the players see the problem from. They think about how this problem for them is also a problem for others. They then devise a way to resolve the problem at its roots. They don’t spend as much time addressing the symptoms and results of the problem as they spend on the causes of the problem.
Remember that within every problem lies the seeds for its solution. How can you turn your highest priority problem into an opportunity?
Poor performers cannot see may options outside of 1 or 2 very linear ways of resolving the problem. They see the problem as a landslide that they must dig out of. For them, the problem is bigger then they are and in many cases surrender to it without a real effort to resolve it. Creativity is thrown to the wind because you aren’t supposed to be creative when you have problems in their minds.

When life throws you a circumstance, can you stop, think and then act?
Poor performers find themselves in the same cycles of problems over and over again. The funny part is that they know it. They tend to spend more time on the symptoms and results of the problems than they do on its causes. How you perceive a situation determines how you will deal with that situation. Would you rather deal with a problem or a challenge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? You perception makes the difference.
The difference between a peak performer and a poor performer is what they each think about. If you know the secrets of a peak performers thought process, you can duplicate their process, and thus their results. So, how do peak performers perceive the problems in their lives? Here is a hint…they don’t view them as problems at all.
Words matter. Peak performers spend their time dealing with “challenges”. They view “problems” as something other people have. Poor performers spend their time talking about and suffering from their problems. They view “challenges” as a happy horse-pucky self-development buzz word that won’t help them now or ever.
Peak performers follow their thoughts to conclusion. They don’t create a plan to resolve a problem and then just move forward. They put time and energy into seeing all of the possible consequences of their decisions. Then, after spending considerable thought on their solution, they may ask for advise from a trusted advisor that is more successful in the area the problem is in then they are. After thinking about what they know, and considering the unknowns, they move forward with confidence.
Poor performers follow their emotions to conclusion. They make decisions based on their current emotion, which is short-term in nature. When the emotion fades, they are often stuck with the consequences of the few actions they’ve already taken. In essence, they are tumbling down a rabbit hole with no insight into where they are going and what’s waiting for them at the bottom. This process tends to create new problems. Sometimes, these new problems are larger than the initial problem they were trying to solve.

Peak performers are constantly self-improving. There is a western analogy that can help caretakers understand why it is so important to take time to care of ourselves. The wagon wheel’s hub holds all the spokes in place. Imagine what would happen to the wheel if the hub became weak and broke. Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the whole wheel would fall apart. Much the same happens to caretakers’ lives when they don’t keep themselves (the hub) strong. When caretakers start to feel apathy towards their clients and even family members, it is as if their life wheel is weakened because their hubs are “fractured.” If they continue on the road to compassion fatigue, they often can get depressed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], get physically ill and may even get to a point where they cannot continue in their caretaker roles, much like the hub of a wheel breaking. Therefore to prevent caretaker compassion fatigue, it is first necessary to recognize we also have nurturing/health needs that must be filled or we can become basically useless to help others.

I like two of the “Blue Collar” comedians who tell funny stories from their real family lives, for example, as I think most of us can relate and it doesn’t put anybody else down, etc. A sense of humor can I find really help make our serious work at least a little bit fun, and fun can help us see caretaking as a more positive form of work.

Karl shared something called Qigong which he describes in his book. The techniques include smooth body movements with special breath work to balance energy. When I tried a few of the techniques I felt a combination of refreshed and relaxed.

Using one or more of the above suggestions that give you a pleasant experience can help fill up your own “needs tank”. Supportive relationships can also help, but be aware that many of us who are caretakers often attract people who basically want us to take care of them. i.e. the classic “give-take” relationship is not “I give, you take”.
1) Take a few minutes to connect with and enjoy nature. (For city dwellers, maybe grow some flowers in your yard and spend time drinking in their beauty/scent, or buy some!)
3) Read something positive. Garrison and Duncan in their book “Stressed Out About Your Nursing Career” suggest “Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul” by Jack Canfield, but some prefer spiritually oriented books, to “feed the soul” or just remind us of our intrinsic worth.

We as people have become too sedentary. For many who don’t feel they can make time in their busy schedules for exercising, they can find ways to add movement into their daily schedules. Problems have a funny way of multiplying. They’re a lot like rabbits!
And that does NOT mean that I am bad, worthless, careless, uncaring, over-the-hill or beyond redemption! It just means that I am human. I am real. I am limited and I am vulnerable.
May even have no family or friends left alive

Mind you, this was not the start to my “problems,” but rather some very undesirable and bitter icing on a piece of cake that had been going rotten for weeks by that point! After a trip to the store where I purchased the computer, I was told that the mother board had died and I needed to send it back to the manufacturer (yes, I’d bought the extended warranty – amen – a small, silver lining!) and that it would be 2-3 weeks before it would be repaired and returned to me.

Then I felt very foolish and weak, because my list seemed quite ridiculous and pathetic. Even the ones that looked like insurmountable mountains in my mind looked like common and easily brushed aside ant hills in the light of day on that piece of paper!
Sure, I had my reasons for withdrawing! Don’t we all have our reasons when we quit something, even if only temporarily? After I wrote my reasons on a piece of paper, I looked at them staring back at me in black and white, (yes, I really DO this exercise and it REALLY works, I don’t just coach my clients to do this!)
My “problems,” in comparison, are so insignificant as to be like a single star in the galaxy, let alone the entire universe.
Have no water for bathing and little, if any, for drinking
But God has a much wider vision and God knows it’s only a bend –
Can’t imagine how this hell might end
So back to my list…I wrote another list of problems. One that put my common cold promptly in perspective…along with my computer problems, and everything else I have been grappling with over the last few months.

"Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food" is ancient wisdom that we seem to have forgotten in these modern, high tech times.
Your body is just like your car. It needs the proper fuel and maintenance. When it doesn't get it, it starts to break down and malfunction. You might first start feeling a little tired and low energy. Then it progresses and the symptoms increase and eventually you get sick.
